Amina Fareed, the recently sworn in MP has marked her first appearance on Saturday’s Somaliland house of representatives sitting, becoming the only incumbent female lawmaker in Somaliland Parliament.
The male dominated house of representatives received her in warm welcome and expressed their gratitude to have a female lawmaker in the parliament. They said this could be of great significance to ensure inclusive representation of women in Somaliland’s decision making entities.
In her remarks during her reception, she emphasized prioritizing women’s participation in politics to play a significant role in the country’s decision making, and thanked her counterparts in the house for their hospitality.
Three weeks prior, the country’s supreme court sworn in her as MP to fill the seat vacated by MP Nuur Osman Guled after his death as the country’s constitution indicates such seats to be filled by the top candidates on the party’s waiting list.
Somaliland House of representatives consists of 82 members and no single female was elected in the last election that was held in the mid of 2021, now, many have praised Amina’s membership of the parliament.
