The UN secretary general’s deputy representative to Somalia visited Hargeisa and held separate meetings with government officials, members of the civil societies, political parties and other members of the public.
During her presence in Hargeisa, she discussed with the selected officials on issues pertaining women’s participation in politics and the decision making process in the country. The envoy stated that the United Nations will continue to support and be in partnership with the Somaliland government.
They also covered policies and other measures to ensure that women, children, youth and people with disabilities are better protected in different spheres of life, as well as efforts to reform current labour laws to include capacity- building for women in order to improve their employability.
The 82 members of the house of representatives are male dominated after all female candidates were unable to secure their seats. The parliament had scrapped the women quota representation to the parliament last year.
