Somaliland Celebrates 61st Anniversary of Independence from UK

The Republic of Somaliland is celebrating its 61st anniversary of gaining independence from the United Kingdom. The anniversry celebrations were held at the Presidential palace led by President of the Republic of Somaliland, HE Muse Bihi Abdi.

In attendance was the Vice President, HE Abdirahman Abdilahi Ismail (Saylici), the Speaker of the House of Elders and Representatives, HE Suleiman Mohamud Aden and Mr. Bashe Mohamed Farah, Chairman of the Supreme Court, Lawyer Adan Haji Ali Ahmed, Leaders of the three national parties KULMIYE, WADDANI and UCID, Ambassadors of UAE, Ethiopia, Taiwan and Djibouti to Somaliland, international delegates from Guinea Bissau, Kenya, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia as well as cabinet members, parliamentarians, government directors and many other dignitaries.

During the colorful event, patriotic songs were sung that reflected the importance of this day and the achievements of the Republic of Somaliland since indipendence.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Somaliland, Mr. Bashe Mohamed Farah, addressed the gathering, underscoring the significance of Somaliland’s re-independence, after the failure of unity with Somalia.

Kenyan lawmaker Mohamed Moalim Mohamud, who was accompanied by a large delegation from his country, said they were “delighted” to attend the 61st anniversary of its independence adding that Kenyan government has always stood by the people of Somaliland.

The Speaker of the House of Elders of the Republic of Somaliland, Mr. Saleban Mohamud Aden, on his part congratulated the people of Somaliland on their national independence day, and called on them to preserve their sovereignty and be patient in the face of any challenge.

The President of the Republic of Somaliland, HE Muse Bihi Abdi, highlighted the importance of the occasion to mark Somaliland’s Independence Day on June 26th.

President Muse Bihi Abdi elaborated on the basic laws and regulations that Africa inherited from European colonialism, saying, “Somaliland has progressed to peace and has not settled in the South. “It’s rule, its regions, its elections and its administration are based on 26th of June 1960″

President Muse Bihi also highlighted Somaliland’s progress in terms of democracy and elections as compared to neighbouring Somalia.
