Hargeisa (Somaliland.com) – Somaliland’s Deputy Minister for Transport and Roads Development Sahal Mohammed Jamaac led Somalilanders in celebrating and remembering the victims of road accidents in the country, on Sunday, November 17.
The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims takes place on the third Sunday in November every year as the appropriate acknowledgment of victims of road traffic crashes and their families.
In an event that happened in Hargeisa, the ministry says Unlincesced drivers are leading causes of accidents in the country. According to Somaliland Traffic Police, 136 people were killed, 2549 others injured in car accidents in the first nine months of 2019.
Young drivers mostly cause these accidents according to the Ministry of Transport and Roads Development. The majority of those involved in accidents are found to have little or no knowledge of road signs and less of a requisite sense, seasoned motorists develop over the years.
A combination of reckless habits including talking on mobile phones while driving, high speed, crowded streets, and over-flowing sidewalks add to the very poor civic sense of most drivers.
