Somaliland government demands its fair share of UN Assistance

Hargeisa (Somaliland.com) – Somaliland has complained that it does not receive its fair share of the humanitarian and development assistance from the United Nations. The government said it has received a reasonable amount of aid for the development of Education, Health, Job Creation and other Infrastructure.

Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi has held talks with United Nations’ Special Representative to Somalia Ambassador James Swan on Wednesday, Jan 9th.

After the meeting, Somaliland Minister of Foreign affairs Yasin Haji Mohamoud Faratoon and United Nations Envoy held a joint press conference in the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa.

Somaliland government also has appealed to the United Nations to reconsider its Status as an Independent Nation. The Foreign Minister stated Somaliland has achieved a lot in 30 years, including establishing a strong nation and securing it’s land and sea territories. Minister Faratoon said the UN Envoy will take Somaliland’s message to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Gutierrez.

In his part, UN Envoy, James Swan, reaffirmed United Nations’ commitment to continuing engagement with Somaliland government and UN’s many programmes in support of Somaliland people.  Mr Swan reminded Somaliland that sixteen United Nations offices, agencies, funds, and programmes are currently active in Somaliland, with their support covers a wide range of areas such as governance, security, development, and humanitarian programmes.

The UN Envoy concluded that the United Nations’ work is diverse, but the common thread is that it aims to make a practical and positive difference to the people and public services of Somaliland.
