Somaliland government has agreed to release 23 detained women who were held captive in Gabiley prison. A traditional elders confirmed their release to the media on Sunday. They said the government made the decision to free the women following continued requests from the parents and traditional elders of the 23 women.
One of the elders also announced that other people who were arrested for allegedly similar incidents in Mandeera prison were expected to be released today. For the last fews, opposition parties have been mounting pressure on President Bihi to release the detained women who were arrested in the 11th August opposition protests.
On Saturday, The Chairperson of women’s wing of Waddani party described the arrest as “Misfortune” and noted that even former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre had never arrested such a number of women which will only be remembered for Muse Bihi.
The Presidential candidate Waddani party Abdirahman Irro also paid a visit on Thursday to the detained women and made a similar call and demanded their immediate release.
