Somaliland Human Rights Center Releases annual report, Covers wide range of human rights abuses

The Human rights center of Somaliland has released its annual report which covered a wide range of human rights abuses that took place in the year 2022 alone in Somaliland. The new report revealed that Somaliland army killed and wounded unarmed demonstrators in several places including LasAnod city which recently experienced protests that lasted several days.

According to the report, at least 48 journalists were arrested while the government suspended several media houses. The report furthermore said, imprisonment of 278 people for freedom of expression was also recorded that include opposition politicians and protestors.

Officials said the report is a result of the daily documentation, interviews of survivors, experts, and government officials, and review of official documents such as court judgments.

The Human rights center also worries about the increasing violation of freedom of expression, threats against journalists, and police brutality. It called on the Somaliland government to make sure to protect the democratic rights provided by the constitution.
