Somaliland National Human Rights commision paid a courtesy visit to eight female youth who were arrested by security forces over wearing Somalia’s flag in Laas’anod Somaliland.
According to a new statement released by Somaliland’s human rights commision , it has been confirmed that the eight female youth have not face problems in the prison. They include university level and high school students in Lasanod.
They have been in prison for the past four days and were transferred to Berbera. The commission highlighted that they have yet to be arraigned in court and called for the judiciary as well as police to accelerate the hearing of the case and finalise it.
Last week, around 50 youth were also arrested in Borama, Somaliland after displaying the flag of Somalia during commemoration of the 61st anniversary of independence. Reports say, the youth were recording videos of themselves on the outskirts of the city that they intended to circulate on social media before the police arrived at the scene and arrested most of them.
This came at a time Somaliland celebrated its 61st anniversary of independence from Great Britain last week. Somalia’s flag with the light blue colour and white star in the middle had previously resulted in more other youth being in custody in Somaliland.
