The international partners of Somaliland have for the very first time publicly broken the silence on president Bihi’s term extension for two years by the house of elders.
The international partners did not clearly state if the mandate extension was right or not but Underlined the importance of a consensus-driven process that allows elections to be held as soon as possible in a manner consistent with the technical considerations set out by Somaliland’s National Electoral Commission.
In a statement, they urged the political stakeholders to work together constructively to agree on a timely roadmap for the elections for Somaliland’s democratic credibility and stability.
The statement came barely a few days after opposition parties deliberately denounced the two-year term extension for President Bihi by the house of elders and clarified they will not recognize him as “a legitimate president” after his tenure ends on November 13. A move that could create a further potential political crisis in Somaliland.
