SOMALILAND.COM – A member of Somaliland’s House of Representatives took the announcement of registering new political parties to a comical level.
The veteran MP Ahmed Mohamed Diriye, Nacnac today announced he will form a new political party. However, he does not know what to name it yet and asked the public to pitch names for the party.
The MP said he wants the new party to champion a ‘united Somaliland’.
President Muse Bihi announced opening the registration of political parties last week, two years ahead of its schedule. He said this was a way around the protracted dispute over the electoral commission which precipitated a political crisis.
However, the opposition parties, UCID and Waddani, called it an attempt to cement the president’s grip on power by destroying the political parties – the last check on the president’s powers.
