Somaliland Opposition party urges the Gov’t to kick start voter registration

The Secretary general of Waddani party of Somaliland Khadar Hussein Abdi has urged the government to immediately start the voter registration process. He said that as the country prepares to hold elections within the coming months, the government should take the lead in expediting the process.

According to the Secretary general, if the President and the ruling party are fully committed to taking part in elections, they should allow the electoral commission to start the voter registration exercise. The opposition party also calls on the political parties and the electoral commision for a consultative meeting to agree on ways to accelerate the election process.

Khadar Hussein told President Bihi to complete election issues before his departure to the United state of America next month. Opposition parties have previously shown deep concern that President Bihi might “attempt” to extend his term in office, an accusation President Bihi’s administration has denied.

On Monday, Somaliland’s international partners called for the commencement of election preparations, including voter registration as soon as possible, so that they can be completed prior to the upcoming election dates.
