HARGEISA, April 12, 2025 — The House of Representatives of the Republic of Somaliland has issued a strong condemnation of the planned visit by Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre to Las Anod, the capital of the Sool region. In a statement released following a parliamentary session, lawmakers described the visit as a blatant violation of Somaliland’s sovereignty and a direct threat to regional stability.
The Parliament expressed full support for the government’s stance against the Prime Minister’s visit, urging immediate preparations to safeguard the nation’s borders. Deputy Speaker Ali Hamud Jibril emphasized that Somaliland and Somalia are distinct, independent states, asserting that any encroachment on Somaliland’s territory is unacceptable.
Key resolutions from the parliamentary session include:
1. Backing the government’s position on the Prime Minister’s planned visit to Las Anod and calling for prompt measures to secure national borders.
2. Recommending the cessation of any future dialogue with the Federal Government of Somalia.
3. Urging President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro) to convene national institutions, political parties, and community leaders to formulate a unified response to the situation in Las Anod.
4. Declaring that any consequences arising from the Prime Minister’s visit will be the sole responsibility of the Somali government.
The planned visit marks the first by a senior Somali official to Las Anod in over four decades. The city has been under the control of the SSC-Khaatumo administration since 2023, following the withdrawal of Somaliland forces. The SSC-Khaatumo leadership, aligning with Mogadishu, has welcomed the Prime Minister’s visit as a sign of federal support.
Somaliland’s government has called upon international bodies, including the African Union, IGAD, the United Nations, and the Arab League, to recognize the Somali government’s actions as destabilizing and to take appropriate measures to uphold peace and security in the region.
As tensions escalate, Somaliland remains steadfast in defending its sovereignty and ensuring the stability of its territories.
