Somaliland President Opens New Facilities at Hargeisa Hospital

Somaliland president, Muse Bihi Abdi, on Monday officialy handed over new facilities to Hargeisa General Hospital. The facilities include a new maternity- children ward, a centre for check-in patients, and a solar energy plant for the hospital.

In the ribbon- cutting ceremony, the president was accompanied by the minister of Health, Dr. Hassan Ismail Yusuf, the hospital administration, and other officials of UNHCR and DRC agencies.

The hospital’s director-general Dr. Axmed Cumar Askar emphasized on the importance of these new facilities and the needs of the hospital to be addressed. He pledged that his administration will continue expanding and modernizing the hospital.

The new facilities in the hospital will address the challenges of maternal and infant mortality rates in Somaliland. According to UNICEF, it is estimated that 1 out of every seven Somali babies die before their fifth birthday with malnutrition being a contributing factor.
