SOMALILAND.COM – Somaliland military forces clashed with Puntland Army in the eastern part of Sanaag Region on Wednesday morning with casualties on both sides.
The fighting erupted in Kadhada village, 18 km from Yubbe district in the eastern Sanaag region.
Somaliland claims that the fighting started when Puntland forces launched an offensive against the Somaliland forces based in Yubbe area, and then the Somaliland National Army repelled the attack.
A statement from Somaliland National Army Command on 26 February alleges the Puntland State of Somalia for aggression and initiating this attack. Somaliland said it has seized weapons and vehicles belonging to Puntland forces, according to the press release.
The press statement from the Somaliland National Army which was signed by the Somaliland military spokesman also added Puntland forces attempted to assassinate the Laasqorey mayor on Tuesday of25th February, but he survived the assault.
The statement also stated that Somaliland was not always ready for war, but that they would defend themselves against invasion, accusing Puntland regional state of creating conflict in the Sanaag region.
In a press release, Puntland State military claims it has repulsed Somaliland attack near Yube village. The press release says the Puntland army captured 50 Somaliland prisoners and destroyed several battle wagons.
Reports indicate that the fighting has resulted in the deaths of four soldiers on both sides, but neither Somaliland nor Puntland has spoken of their casualties.
This new clash comes when Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is trying to facilitate the Somaliland-Somalia talks.
