The regional courts of Awdal and Sahel have formally ratified the elected local council members of the two electoral districts separately. Some of the senior government officials were present to witness the event including Mohamed Kaahin who is the interior minister.
The interior minister advised all the new local council members to serve for the city and the nation at their best level. He also noted that the new local council members of Berbera will have their first meeting tomorrow to elect the Mayor of the city and his deputy.
One of the front runners of these positions is Abdushakour Ciddin from the ruling party who is also the outgoing mayor of the city. The new political alliance between the two opposition parties; Waddani and Ucid is believed to have affected his race.
Other major cities are expected to follow suit. The regional court approval event of Hargeisa will take place tomorrow while their first meeting will be on 19th june. On 31 May Somaliland people cast their votes for the local council and house of representatives where eventually the two opposition parties dominated the majority seats of both municipalities and house of representatives.
