The Somaliland government has finally released around 35 female youth from Borama who were detained in Gabiley prison for wearing Somalia’s flag outfits after almost three weeks in custody.
The Human rights centre described the move as “a happy news” for the public and called on those involved to respect the value of democracy and to refrain from arbitrarily arresting others.
Last month, Somaliland police confirmed arresting 50 youth in Borama city for displaying the flag of Somalia. Some of them were dressed in an attire made of the flag of neighbouring Somalia. Reports say, the youth were recording videos of themselves on the outskirts of the city and intended to circulate them on social media before the police arrived at the scene and arrested most of them.
Videos widely circulated on Social media reveal Police officers chasing and arresting female youth wearing an attire made of Somalia flag on the outskirts of the western city of Somaliland, Borama. This came at a time Somaliland celebrated its 61st anniversary of independence from Great Britain.
