Hargeisa (Somaliland.com) – The row between Somaliland’s ministry of education and the private schools in the country is yet to be resolved, after weeks of parliament mediation.
The Minister of Education Mr. Osman Jama Adan has confirmed the stalemate, who has come before the House of Elders, on Monday, said that no progress has been made in resolving the dispute.
The row centers on a new ministry policy for the distribution of the scholarship slots that Somaliland students were awarded by foreign governments. The policy outlines that all scholarship positions should go to public schools’ students. The association of private schools contested that this omission is unfair to their students.
However, the ministry of education repeated several times that the government’s scholarships are meant for disadvantaged public schools students that cannot afford to pursue higher education abroad.
Somaliland parliament has been trying to broker a deal between the government and the association of private schools for the last three weeks. So far, both Houses have twice summoned the minister of education, and the association of private schools.
