Somaliland Vice President Abdirahman Abdullahi Sayli’i has launched a national rain water harvesting conference which is intended to encourage people to take advantage of the rain waters during rainy seasons.
Other government officials attended the launching ceremony including the Somaliland water minister Mohamed Dirie.
In his remarks, Somaliland vice President said there was a need for the community to harvest rain water, and that this program is a comprehensive program to educate the community on the benefits of rainwater.
“ It’s important that we take advantage of our annual rain. Every year, we receive a good percentage of water. Sometimes we experience consecutive droughts and sometimes we receive rain. It depends on climate change.”said the Vice President.
Somaliland minister of water resources Mohamed Muse Dirie also stressed on the importance of utilising the rain water during the country’s rainy season. He also promised that his ministry will extend this project to the other regions and districts of Somaliland.
“We will extend this project to the other parts of the country by conducting public awarenesses and government directives. As government officials, we will not only be sharing our ideas for the public, but, we shall be informative and give directions for our community.”
This project will support the community to identify traditional water conservation systems; technical and socio-economic factors for evaluating, planning and designing Rain Water harvesting projects to boost agricultural and livestock production.
