The Presidential candidate of Somaliland’s largest opposition party (Waddani) Abdirahman Irro has paid a visit on Thursday to the women detained over the recent opposition protests in the major towns of Somaliland. In a statement, the party said the age of the 23 women who were imprisoned is between 17 – 30 years old.
The statement reads that the police arrested some of the women who were not even a part of the protests. Some are University students while others are new mothers who recently gave birth. Speaking to the detainees, Abdirahman Irro said the government will be held accountable for the “Unconstitutional” detentions against the civilians and peaceful demonstrators.
The party said, on their part, the 23 detained women expressed their happiness for the visit by Waddani’s presidential candidate and they informed the candidate about the manner in which they were held and how they were treated and thanked the officials of Gabilay Prison.
