Somaliland’s WADDANI party has officially kicked off its second general assembly convention in Hargeisa. Around 2,000 participants including delegates and guests from the constituents across the country attended the opening ceremony . The theme of the convention is national cohesion and fair distribution of national resources.
In the First few minutes of the convention, the convention preparation committee delivered a report on the procedure of the event. Fifteen candidates for key party leadership positions were also announced. They include the chairman of the party, Hersie Ali Haji Hassan, and the secretary-general – Khadar Hussein Abdi who is running for his second term.
During the opening remarks, Party Officials kept praising Abdirahman Irro for being the first incumbent Chairman to hand over the political office without seeking re-election and defined him as a true leader with a solid political vision.
Khadar Hussein Abdi, the secretary general of the party, pointed out that his political party will pave a new path for Somaliland’s democracy. He said WADDANI is aims to advocate for social justice and equality in Somaliland.
The outgoing Chairman of the party and Presidential nominee Abdirahman Irro accentuated that WADDANI aimed at re-establishing social trust; Improved participation of women, the young and the marginalized. He also alleged the government of detaining over 50 journalists and being involved in human rights abuses.
Talking about the country’s foreign policy, Abdirahman Irro recommended that the Horn of Africa state should have an explicit long vision of foreign diplomacy. He highlighted having diplomatic relations with unrecognized states will not be adding value to Somaliland’s case of recognition.
