The UAE, under the direction of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, has shipped in 572 tonnes of food supplies for the drought affected people in Somalia.
The supplies which have arrived at Mogadishu port was supervised by the Emirates Red Crescent and will be distributed to those most affected by drought. It is estimated that the aid will be distributed to help around 600,000 people.
The clerk of the Emirates Red Crescent, Mohammed Ateeq Al Falahi, said the arrival of aid was part of phase three of the UAE’s response to the drought affecting Somalia.
The first phase saw UAE setting up an air bridge to Mogadishu while phase two focused on providing clean drinking water to local communities in remote areas, according to the secretary.
Research reveals that about 4.6 million people are in dire need of help in the horn of Africa which is currently facing political instability as well as security challenges.
