Hargeisa (Somaliland.com) – Officials from Axiom International Ltd have today met the Minister for Justice in Somaliland, during which they discussed how to develop the capacity and capability to develop effective security and justice systems in the country.
The Ministry of justice in Somaliland has partnered with UKAid through the implementing agency, Axiom International ltd, to judicial Crime Management System and to improve governance; community safety; security; judicial and prison systems; policing; forensic infrastructure and capability; and national defence capabilities and how to integrate these complementary fields of activity in innovative and imaginative ways to suit other, individual jurisdictions.
Axiom is implementing UKaid projects in Somaliland such as supporting custodial corps and prisons staff; capacity building and leadership training for the judiciary and also aid Coast Guard operations in the country.
The project funded through the UK’s foreign and Commonwealth Office is expected to streamline access to justice in Somaliland.
The crime management system in prisons once put in place will ease the access to justice n Somaliland. It will enable criminal cases to be recorded and updated as the case progresses through all stages. The digital system is accurate and will encourage a transparent administration of justice.

The president of the Republic of Somaliland HE Muse Bihi recently said that the main jail in Hargeisa contains more than 2,500 prisoners, 40 percent of whom are under the age of 30, from major cities. They were convicted to crimes ranging from acts of violence and security disturbances including robbery and sometimes due to clan issues.
With this worrying statistics, this project funded by the UK’s foreign and Commonwealth Office is widely believed that it will transform the Somalilanders access to justice system and alleviate public suffering.
