The United Nations and foreign diplomats have welcomed the ongoing national consultative council in Mogadishu which brought together the Prime minister and heads of federal member states to prioritize completing the remaining seats of the federal parliament.
The UN urged the NCC to ensure that elections are credible and completed soon so Somalia can focus on other priority issues like security and development. Somalia’s international partners encouraged improvements in the delivery of the electoral process, including correcting deficiencies in procedural rules and ensuring clear timelines for the rapid completion of credible elections.
The forum comes eight days after a deadlock sparked between President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble following a decree by Farmaajo to suspend PM Roble from office over alleged corruption and misuse of public land.
Both leaders had traded accusations, a move that had a huge impact on the ongoing parliamentary elections. UN, AU, IGAD and other international communities have called on the leaders to de-escalate political tensions and resolve their differences through negotiation.
