WADDANI Chairman regrets govt’s accusations towards journalists

SOMALILAND.COM – The chairman of Somaliland’s opposition party, Waddani, Abdirahman Abdillahi Irro, has condoled with Somaliland’s independent journalists over government accusations of treason.

The chairman regretted that the journalists who have contributed so much to Somaliland’s success are accused of treason by the government without evidence. He said this is not new since the Kulmiye party government used to level the same charge at the Waddani party. He added that the government in this regard went as far as fabricating documents and photos.

This followed a recent allegation that thirty journalists in Somaliland are in the payroll of Somalia’s deputy prime ministers. The allegations were made by the ministers of interior, Mohamed Kahin Ahmed and the minister of information, Saleebaan Koore.

Abdirahman Irro met with Somaliland journalists at his party headquarters on Thursday morning.  The journalists shared with the chairman the challenges they face in their line of work. Abdirahman Irro acknowledged the difficult condition journalists operate in and expressed his support for the freedom of the press enshrined in the country’s constitution.

On the other hand, he appreciated the role Somaliland’s independent media played in Somaliland’s good reputation with the world.
