SOMALILAND.COM – The leader of Somaliland’s opposition party Waddani called on the president to explain his meeting with Somalia’s president Mohamed Abdillahi Farmajo in Addis Ababa.
Abdirahman Irro who returned home yesterday afternoon said the president is obligated to inform the public about his meeting with Somalia’s president at the sidelines of the AU summit in Addis Ababa.
Both Somaliland and Villa Somalia confirmed the meeting of presidents Bihi and Farmajo. However, they both declined to offer details of what had transpired in the meeting. This was the first confirmed meeting between the presidents since they took office in 2017.
Somalia’s president Mohamed Abdillahi Farmajo later apologized for atrocities committed in the 1980s against the people of Somaliland by the government of Somalia. The move has been interpreted by many as a result of the meeting with president Bihi.
The chairman of Waddani Party announced that they support talks with Somalia with the caveat that the opposition parties and all the regions of the country are consulted.
On the other hand, the chairman commented on his meeting with President Bihi in the Ethiopian capital. He said the meeting was requested by the president and discussed primarily the protracted disagreement over the elections commission.
Abdirahman Irro announced that the meeting ended without any breakthrough on the contested issue of disbanding the electoral commission. He reiterated the position of the two opposition parties regarding the necessity of holding an election this year and disbanded the controversial electoral commission.
