South Africa: Opposition DA vows to unseat ruling ANC, create jobs ahead of key elections

South Africa’s main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, wrapped up its political rally on Sunday in the final pre-election push to unseat the ruling African National Congress ahead of elections later this week.
 
The Democratic Alliance has emerged as the biggest opposition party in South Africa and has gathered other opposition parties to form an alliance known as the Multi-Party Charter for South Africa. 
 
They are coming to combine their votes to challenge the ruling ANC after the elections.
 
Sunday’s final campaign coincided with that of the smaller opposition, the Inkatha Freedom Party, which has a strong base in the populous KwaZulu Natal region and has promised to work with the main opposition.
 
The leader of the Democratic Alliance, John Steenhuisen, expressed fears over the possible alliance between the ANC, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and the uMkhonto weSizwe Party, aided by the Patriotic Alliance. 
 
He argued that such a move will be doomsday for South Africa. 
 
He called on voters to cast their ballots for the Democratic Alliance party in return for a government that creates two million new jobs, fights crimes, and eliminates inequality, among other promises. 
 
Many observers expect the ANC to dip below for the first time, but the ANC’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has repeatedly expressed confidence the governing party would win the 2024 elections with a 50%+1 majority.
