In an effort to address the escalating crisis in the country, the Sudanese government announced on Sunday that Abdelfattah Al-Burhan, the chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council, and Workneh Gebeyehu, the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), have come together to organize an urgent summit.
The summit aims to tackle the pressing issues contributing to the crisis that has been unfolding in Sudan.
This announcement follows discussions between Al-Burhan and Workneh during a meeting with Djibouti President Ismail Omar.
In a statement released by the Sudanese Presidency, the discussions focused on the ongoing negotiations in Saudi Arabia, where the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are directly engaged in seeking a resolution to the crisis.
The statement highlighted the mutual agreement to convene an emergency IGAD summit, stressing the importance of expediting the gathering in Djibouti.
Workneh, the IGAD executive secretary, confirmed the meeting with Al-Burhan on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging the discussion about IGAD’s role in facilitating talks on the current crisis.
According to him, a sustainable ceasefire, aimed at improving humanitarian conditions and fostering an environment conducive to a lasting political resolution is imperative.
It is expected that the outcomes of the proposed IGAD summit will be crucial in addressing the multifaceted challenges facing the nation and to find a sustainable solution amid the growing concerns of violence and instability.
