The anticipated protest against election delays in Mogadishu has been postponed following intervention from clan elders. The organizing committee said the protest was not “permanently canceled” but they decided to postpone it and will review decisions on sunday.
The council of opposition Presidential candidates welcomed the move and alleged the governor of Banadir region for attempting to block the protest in what they believe is a peaceful demonstration.
On Wednesday, the internal security ministry permitted the holding of protests in Mogadishu set for Thursday overruling a decision by the Banaadir Regional Administration against the protests. The ministry stated that the protests were within their constitutional rights to organise and demonstrate.
The minister urged the protestors to cooperate with security forces. Banadir Regional Authority issued an order against any protests in the city. The conflicting statements from the two offices underscore the ongoing political differences between Prime Minister Mohamed Roble and outgoing president Mohamed Farmaajo.
