UK Appoints New Ambassador to Somalia

Mr Ben Fender OBE has been appointed Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Somalia

The UK has appointed a new Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Somalia.

A brief dispatch from the Foreign and Commonwealth office said Mr Ben Fender OBE has been appointed Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Somalia in succession to Mr David Concar, who will be transferring to another Diplomatic Service appointment. Mr Fender will take up his appointment in February 2019.

He previously worked in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Palestine, Liberia, among other stations . In the recent past, the UK has expressed interest in helping restore stability and security in Somalia by donating funds for peacekeeping.

Fender now becomes the 5th UK ambassador to Somalia since Her Majesty Government resumed diplomatic relations with Somalia in 2012. The UK was among the first western governments to re-establish diplomatic relations with Somalia in 2012 following the end of the Transitional Federal Government era.
