The United Nations has issued a strong condemnation following a deadly mortar attack near the Halane compound in Mogadishu. The incident, initially reported without casualties, escalated with the confirmation of a fatality involving a member of the UN Guard Unit.
Catriona Laing, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. She said the UN Guard Unit plays an integral role in ensuring the safety and security of UN staff working in support of Somali peace- and state-building.
Al-Shabaab has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack, which has prompted an immediate response from the Somalia government and international bodies. The UN in Somalia has called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
The Halane compound, located in the vicinity of Aden Adde International Airport, came under mortar fire, leading to heightened security measures in the area. No significant damage was reported initially, but the situation developed with the UN’s confirmation of the death and infrastructure damage.
