Hargaysa, 06, November, 2018. Somaliland’s president Muse Bihi has welcomed United Nations(UN) envoy for Somalia Nicholas Haysom, to help diffuse the growing tension between his country and Puntland’s over Tukaraq area. Tukaraq, a village in the East of Sool region is disputed between the Somaliland and Puntland. It is located between Las Anod and Garowe.

Prior to his trip to Hargeisa the capital of Somaliland, Haysom visited Garowe to urge them to stop the hostilities and seek out a peaceful solution to the current crisis in Tukaraq.

Early on, Somaliland moved its forces Eastwards to bring regions that were formerly known as “the British Somaliland” under its control, but Puntland resisted the move based on ethnic lines.

Puntland claims the residents are associated with them by tribal blood and therefore they cannot accept to be ruled from Hargeisa.  Since then, the clashes have been on and off.

Somaliland deputy president Abdirahman Abdilahi Saylici and Wadani opposition leader Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi and Faysal Warabi of UCID party expressed concern that Puntland president Abdiwali Gaas’s trip to Badhan, a disputed town that does not belong to either side, was shrouded in mystery.

They said Puntland president’s move was uncalled-for and may lead to more aggressions, and a negative blow to the ongoing peace initiative aimed to end the current crisis.

According to the Puntlandnews.net, Ethiopian peacemakers will be deployed soon as any major outbreak of war will impact the regional stability and peace.
