UN Under-Secretary-General, President Hassan Sheikh Hold Discussions on Security in Somalia

During a diplomatic mission to Somalia, UN Under-Secretary-General Atul Khare engaged in talks with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The discussions, as reported by Villa Somalia, centered on the continuing military offensive against the Al Shabaab group, the planned reduction of ATMIS (African Union Transition Mission in Somalia) troops, and the prospective post-ATMIS support to Somalia offered by UNSOS (UN Support Office in Somalia).

UNSOS plays a vital role in providing logistical support to ATMIS and the Somalia Security Forces (SSF). The organization has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to bolstering the efforts of the Somalia government in the fight against Al-Shabaab.

Highlighting counterterrorism as a top priority for the federal government, officials have consistently sought increased international assistance over the past ten months to address this pressing concern.

The government claimed it had weakened Alshabab during the first phase of the operation, liberated swathes of territories and killed hundreds of Alshabab fighters.
