President Emmerson Mnagagwa, his Vice and other top officials have been sanctioned by the United States over corruption and human rights abuses. The wife of the Zimbabwean President was also not left out as she was accused of facilitating her husband’s corrupt activities…

The United States government has slapped sanctions on Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa, including top officials, over corruption and human rights abuses.

Washington said the sanctions became necessary as leaders in Zimbabwe were looting public resources for personal benefits.

In a statement, the US declared that “These illicit activities support and contribute to a global criminal network of bribery, smuggling, and money laundering that impoverish communities in Zimbabwe, southern Africa, and other parts of the world.”

President Mnangagwa, alongside his Vice, Constantino Chiwenga and businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei.

The wife of the Zimbabwean President, Auxillia Mnangagwa, was also listed in the sanctions because she “facilitates her husband’s corrupt activities.”

Washington also denounced the ruling government in the southern African country for targeting civil society and restricting political activity.

The US assured that “sanctions on the President, his vice and other individuals and entities do not represent sanctions on Zimbabwe or its public.

It added that the heinous conduct of some of Zimbabwe’s most prominent individuals and businesses was comparable to that of the world’s worst human rights violators and corrupt actors.

The Zimbabwean authorities have yet to respond to the charge but have dismissed previous sanctions as part of efforts to force political change by the Western powers.
