Ethiopian Airliner Crashes En-route to Nairobi, Killing All 157 Onboard

Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 on a regular scheduled flight to Nairobi, Kenya crashed this morning around Bishoftu, 47km away from the capital Addis Ababa, killing all the 149 passengers and 8 crew members on board.

The aircraft B-737-800MAX with registration number ET- AVJ took off at 08:38 am local time from Addis Ababa, Bole International Airport and lost contact at 08:44am, according to a statement Ethiopian sent to FBC.

There were no survivors in the crash.The victims were of 35 nationalities.

Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, Tewolde Gebremariam told journalists later this afternoon that “It is too early to speculate the cause of the accident and further investigation will be carried out to find out the cause of the accident.”

He said the investigation will be held in collaboration with all stakeholders including the aircraft manufacturer Boeing, Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority and other international entities to maintain the international standard and information will be provided once the cause is identified.

He further said the airlines will provide all the necessary support to the families of the victims.

A senior captain named Yared Getachew with a cumulative flight hour of more than 8000 and with a commendable performance was commanding the flight along with first officer Ahmed Nur Mohammod Nur who had a flight hour of 200.

The crashed B-737-800MAX airplane flew back to Addis from Johannesburg this morning to its yet another flight bound to Nairobi underwent a rigorous first check maintenance in February 04,2019.

B-737-800Max aircraft is new to the skies and been launched in 2016. Ethiopian received the aircraft in July last year.

Four months ago another brand new 737-800 MAX (Lion Air) had crashed in Indonesia.

The Office of the Prime Minister, on behalf of the Government and people of Ethiopia, expressed its deepest condolences to the families of those that have lost their loved ones.

Office of the President, House of People’s Representatives, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as all the regional states and two city administrations expressed their deep sorrow over the crash.

Boeing Company also expressed its heartfelt sympathies to the families and loved ones of the passengers and crew on board and stand ready to support the Ethiopian Airlines team.

A Boeing technical team is prepared to provide technical assistance at the request and under the direction of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, the Company said in a statement it issued today.
