In an effort to counter the influence of Washington’s rivals on the continent, the United States Vice President Kamala Harris has re-emphasized the US commitment to increasing investment in Africa and aiding in the stimulation of economic growth. Kamala Harris said this as she arrived in Ghana on Sunday where she is commencing her tour of Africa.
The United States has expressed its commitment to increase investment in Africa and help stimulate economic growth as part of efforts to counter the influence of Washington’s rivals on the continent. This was disclosed by the US Vice President, Kamala Harris as she began a week long tour of the continent.
The United States has, in recent decades, lost its presence and dominance in Africa to China and Russia. China has made significant investments in Africa, particularly in the development of infrastructure and natural resources.
At the same time, Russian influence has increased, in part due to the deployment of Russian military personnel from the private military contractor Wagner Group to support governments in a number of nations.
Speaking shortly after she arrived in Ghana, the first destination in a trip that will include visits to Tanzania and Zambia, the US Vice President said she intends to do work that is focused on increasing investments in Africa and facilitating economic growth and opportunity.
While in Ghana, the US Vice President is expected to discuss the economic and security challenges facing the African country when she meets with Ghana’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo. They also are expected to hold a joint news conference.
President Joe Biden’s administration has sought to strengthen ties with Africa, in part to provide an alternative to rival powers.
Kamala Harris plans to visit Ghana, Tanzania and Zambia, focusing on economic development, climate change, food security and a rising youth population, before she returns to Washington on the Second day of April.
