Mombasa – Three people were killed and two others injured after suspected Al Shabaab militants attacked a passenger bus at Lamu County, Kenya
The gunmen are said to have opened fire at the bus before shooting three men at close range, killing them on the spot.
One of the injured passengers sustained a bullet wound on the arm while the other was shot on the head.
Confirming the 12.30pm attack, Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia said the bus belonging to Mombasa Raha Sacco was heading to Lamu from Mombasa.
A multi-agency security team have since been deployed to comb the area as they pursue the attackers.
Transport along the Lamu-Garsen road has been suspended as security agencies, including the army, comb the area for the attackers.
The Somalia-based militant group has ramped up attacks in recent months, with its deadliest being a car bomb that claimed the lives of 90 people in Mogadishu on Saturday.
In Kenya, at least 10 people, including police officers, were killed when the terrorists attacked a bus and shot dead Christian passengers two week ago.
Shabaab militants also kidnapped two businessmen on December 26 in Liboi area along the Kenya-Somalia border.
The businessmen were freed on December 27, with police saying they had launched a manhunt for the criminals.
