The United Nations Human Rights Commissioner Volker Turk has called on Sudanese political gladiators to reach an agreement to bring to an end the worsening political and economic woes which has exacerbated since military coup last year.
The Human Rights chief on Wednesday urged Sudanese political cabals to come to the round table and chart a roadmap to political deal.
As discussions between Sudan’s Forces for Freedom and Change, and the military stronghold continue for weeks in the latest bid to break the deadlock following the 2021 military coup, the United Nations support the political process as its Human Rights Commissioner concluded his first official visit to Sudan.
The commissioner called on all sides involved in the political process to go the extra mile, to work towards prompt restoration of civilian rule in the country.
When arrived in Sudan on Sunday, Volker Turk held talks with senior officials including coup leader General Al-Burhan and reaffirmed the right to peaceful assembly during a press conference held in Khartoum.
Advising the relevant security apparatus in enforcing the law in line with human rights, Turk said people have the right to peaceful demonstration ‘without fear of being shot at.”
Human rights group reported that latest crackdown on anti-coup protests has killed an estimated 119 people.
