Against the backdrop of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, significant diplomatic strides were made as Djibouti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, engaged in a pivotal meeting with Latvia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Krišjānis Kariņš.

This diplomatic rendezvous, held on 20 September 2023, brought together representatives from Djibouti, Latvia, and Mongolia.

The trio of Ministers gathered to discuss critical global issues that demand collective action and international cooperation.

Foremost among the topics of discussion was the fragile security situation in Sudan and the broader Horn of Africa region.

The area faces multifaceted challenges stemming from military conflicts and the looming specter of climate change, both of which have contributed to a severe food insecurity crisis.

Minister Kariņš acknowledged Djibouti’s pivotal role in mediating efforts through the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and lauded Djibouti’s substantial support in evacuating European Union citizens during the onset of the military conflict in Sudan.

The conversation did not end there. Minister Kariņš also highlighted Latvia’s unwavering stance against Russian aggression in Ukraine, emphasizing the global implications of this geopolitical issue.

The possibility of establishing a Baltic corridor as an alternative route for Ukrainian agricultural products to reach international markets was also explored, demonstrating Latvia’s proactive approach to addressing complex challenges.

In a separate discussion with Mongolia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Battsetseg Batmunkh, bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Mongolia was a key focus.

Both Ministers explored avenues for collaboration in the realms of digitalization, trade, and education.
